AUSSIES Peter Drew
Peter Drew's AUSSIE Exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum
What does it mean to be Australian? At the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, Australian artist Peter Drew's iconic AUSSIE poster series invites visitors to explore how ideas of identity, belonging and migration have shaped the nation.
The Stories Behind the Posters
Since 2016, Drew has pasted thousands of his distinctive AUSSIE posters on streets across Australia. The portraits feature people who lived during the era of the White Australia policy, a period when successive Commonwealth governments restricted and discriminated against non-white migration.
Many of those featured were seeking exemptions from the dictation test, a policy tool used to limit migration and define who could enter Australia.
A Powerful Look at Australian Identity
Bringing these works together in one location, this exhibition explores the lives behind the portraits while prompting visitors to consider how government policies have influenced who is seen as Australian, both historically and today.
