Slice slice baby: The best pizzas in Darling Harbour
Is there any feeling more comforting than a warm pizza box in your lap? Maybe the feeling of actually eating a pizza - that combination of melty mozzarella, punchy tomato sauce and a crunchy, chewy crust gently kissed by woodfire.
Stop drooling and keep reading because 9 February is World Pizza Day, an entire 24 hours dedicated to our favourite food. To help you celebrate we’ve rounded up the best pizza restaurants in Sydney and Darling Harbour, and picked the most mind blowing slice off their menu. Let’s get cheesy.
Fratelli Fresh: Margherita
Fratelli Fresh is a casual dining emporium serving old school authentic Italian cuisine. Pasta, antipasti, mains and cocktails, you name it. It’s the perfect place to take the family, and kids under 12 even eat for free.
But the best thing about Fratelli’s is definitely their pizza. The Margherita is a classic, executed to perfection, with mozzarella, parmesan, tomato and basil. It’s woodfired until charred and golden and covered in melty cheese - yet it still tastes impossibly fresh. Pro tip: add buffalo mozzarella for an extra helping of cheesy goodness.
Baia Darling Harbour: Rocket
If you fancy a little luxury with your pizza, Baia THE ITALIAN should be your go-to. You’ll find it on the promenade on Cockle Bay Wharf, with plenty of outdoor seating and views over the harbour.
The three hatted chef at Baia knows what he’s about - his pizza is no joke. Our favourite slice is the Proscuitto, which features salty prosciutto with rocket, cherry tomatoes, shaved parmesan and of course; mozzarella.
Blackbird Cafe: Tropical
Blackbird Cafe is one of Cockle Bay’s most iconic restaurants, featuring panoramic views of Darling Harbour and a huge second floor outdoor terrace. Their menu fuses Italian, Asian, and Aussie cuisine with delicious results.
We’re going to make a controversial call and say the best pizza on the menu is the Tropical, featuring leg ham from the bone, caramelised pineapple (yes, pineapple on pizza) and Roma tomatoes. It’s the perfect combination of savoury and sweet.
Una metre of Pizza anyone?
If your answer to the question ‘how much pizza do you want’? is ‘one metre or more', then these slabs of heaven are for you...
Uliveto: Diavola
Uliveto in Haymarket offers nonna style handmade pasta, pizza, mains and cocktails - complete with spacious indoor and outdoor dining. Their pizza comes in either 50cm or metre long slabs so make sure you bring a few friends who like to eat. Or alternatively order a metre of the Diavola to yourself and make an evening out of it - don’t forget to wear your stretchy pants.
Available in 50cm and 1 metre long.
Casa: 4 Formaggi
The chefs at Casa Ristorante are constantly searching for the best Italian products, from virgin olive oil, to flour and mozzarella. The result? Possibly Sydney’s most authentic Italian pizza.
You’ll find them on King Street Wharf with dozens of seats in the sun, an extensive drinks list with woodfired ovens constantly blazing. You cheese fiends will love the 4 Formaggi which features four cheeses including fior di latte, gorgonzola, ricotta and parmesan.
Available in 50cm and 1 metre long.
