Produced by Brian Eno, 1978’s “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!” ignited underground fame with its call-to-arms sound. DEVO’s unconventional image and themes sparked both admiration and criticism. “Duty Now for the Future” (1979) followed with more success. “Freedom of Choice” (1980) marked a peak, yielding the hit “Whip It” and iconic video.
