Presented by leading musicians of the China Conservatory of Music, Stringed Melodies and Elegant Rhythms brings centuries of musical heritage to life through virtuosic performance, poetic storytelling and exquisitely layered sound.
 

A Journey Through Sound and Story

At the heart of the program is the celebrated “Pipa π” Chamber Music Ensemble, whose performances are renowned for precision, emotional depth and contemporary interpretation of classical forms. Across the week, audiences will be guided through vivid musical scenes—from tranquil riverscapes and misty dawns to joyous reunions and dramatic battlefield epics.

Highlights include:

• Summer (Jing Sun) - A dazzling four-pipa work inspired by folk music from Xinjiang, capturing morning dew, radiant sunlight and the rhythmic vitality of summer through intricate counterpoint and rich technique.
• Jolly Meeting (Zicun Feng) - A beloved bamboo flute solo rooted in Inner Mongolian folk tunes, expressing the tenderness and joy of lovers separated and reunited.
• Morning Fog (Zhongshan Wang) - A poetic guzheng solo evoking a misty Beijing morning—willows, ancient towers and bustling streets emerging like brushstrokes from the haze.
• Items (Bochan Li) - An evocative chamber work for pipa and ruan exploring inheritance, craftsmanship and moral character—both physical and spiritual.
• A Moonlit Night on the Spring River (Traditional) - A timeless masterpiece painting the gentle beauty of the Yangtze under moonlight, unfolding like a refined ink landscape scroll.
• Ambush from All Sides (Traditional, arr. Dehai Liu) - One of the most iconic pipa works, depicting the decisive battle between Chu and Han with gripping drama, technical brilliance and explosive momentum.
• Deep Night (Peking Opera Tune, arr. Hua Wu) - A powerful ensemble adaptation drawn from Kunqu and Peking Opera traditions, marked by flowing melodies and commanding rhythmic drive.

 

World-Class Artists

Led by Professor Yong Ge, one of China’s most acclaimed pipa masters and educators, the ensemble features rising stars and award-winning performers from the China Conservatory of Music, including specialists in pipa, guzheng, bamboo flute, xiao and percussion.

Together, they bring international experience, youthful energy and scholarly depth—having performed across Asia, Europe, the Americas and major world stages.
