Celebrate Refugee Week at Darling Square
Refugee Week starts on World Refugee Day, Sunday 20 June and will run through to Saturday 26 June. Darling Square is embracing Refugee Week’s theme of ‘Unity. The Way Forward,’ with great food, art and music to raise funds to support the work of the Asylum Seekers Centre.
Darling Square is proud to support the brilliant work of refugee-run kitchen Uma Curry & Roti, Bucket Boys, and social enterprise Art Aid to raise funds for this great cause. There will also be a multicultural DJ performance by You Know Dam Right on Saturday night. So grab a curry, beer or purchase a print to acknowledge the contributions, creativity, and resilience of refugees in Australia.
FOOD
Darling Square is home to refugee and asylum seeker led curry house Uma Curry & Roti, the new sister of the award-winning social enterprise, Parliament on King. The curry house gives vital work opportunities to refugees and serves a worldly and inclusive menu. Built with everyone in mind, the meat offerings are halal, half the curries are vegan and they’re all gluten free. Swing by during the week to get your $15 deal with two curries, roti, rice & pickles. $5 of your purchase will go toward the Asylum Seekers Centre.
Plus, accompany your meal with a beer from Bucket Boys’ Karma Keg, available 12 noon to 10pm, Friday 25 June. Get beers for just $7 & $9.50, with all proceeds going to the Asylum Seekers Centre. The Karma Keg has been kindly donated by local independent brewer Hawkers Beer.
ART
Art that looks good, feels good and does good. Art Aid is a social enterprise empowering artists and collectors to respond to humanitarian and ecological issues around the world. Pimp your pad with colour, culture and good karma from some of Australia’s most conscientious and contemporary artists, knowing that 33% of the price will be donated to the Asylum Seekers Centre. Check out some of the remarkable prints available in the pop up at gallery at Bucket Boys bar.
MUSIC
Enjoy a hearty curry and beer whilst experiencing a fun, multicultural DJ set by You Know Dam Right on Saturday 26 June, 5pm - 9pm. You Know Dam Right unites cultures through musical journeys, with a focus on afro beats and world house.
