About the artist
Zhao Nan is a distinguished inheritor of the traditional art of Beijing opera facial makeup, representing the fourth generation of the Qian Jin-Fu school. From a young age, she trained under her father, Zhao Yongqi, a skilled artist in this field. Qian Jin-Fu (1862-1937) was a renowned performer of martial and painted-face roles, whose makeup artistry was once acclaimed as "peerless under heaven." Zhao Nan not only possesses a deep understanding of Beijing opera culture and a passion for performing female roles but also excels in the art of painting male roles. Her talent allows her to both perform on stage and create off stage. She has taught courses on facial makeup art at Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts & Design, and on traditional opera character design at the Beijing Film Academy. Additionally, she has led open classes on intangible cultural heritage on Youku and participated in numerous cultural exchange events internationally.
